Osmosis in a Shell-Less Egg
Osmosis in a Shell-Less Egg
Read the data, then write your explanation.
What happened
Each raw egg soaked in vinegar until its hard shell dissolved away. What is left is a shell-less egg: the yolk and white are still inside, held in by a thin, bendy membrane. Liquid can move through that membrane. One egg went into a cup of plain water. The other went into a cup of corn syrup, which is mostly dissolved sugar with very little water in it. Both eggs sat for one day, and each was weighed on the same scale before and after.
Read the scale in each photo
Record the data
| Liquid the egg sat in | Mass at the start | Mass after 1 day | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain water | |||
| Corn syrup |
For each egg, write whether it gained or lost mass, and by how many grams. Show your subtraction.
Both eggs started within one gram of each other. Why does that matter when you compare them?
Besides the numbers on the scale, describe how the two eggs looked different after one day.
Write one question these photos make you want answered.
Write your explanation
Question: What happens to the mass of a shell-less egg as the amount of dissolved material in the liquid around it increases?
Claim
Answer the question in one sentence. No reasons yet.
Evidence
Give the measurements from the data table that back up your claim. Use numbers and units.
Reasoning
Explain why the evidence supports your claim. What moved through the membrane, which direction did it go, and why?
