Science Data Analysis Collection

After meeting with VST Academic Review Board (an amazing group of teachers that comes together to discuss what kinds of content and improvements we can make to better support science teachers everywhere!) and a poll taken in a giant FB group- we realized that we need to step up our game when it comes to data analysis resources!  We received lots of fantastic ideas to include making gradual graph reveals, multiple choice graph reading and interpretation activities, including Depth of Knowledge labels, and more CER.  This Science Data Analysis Collection is our response to all this helpful feedback.  We are just getting started!  Please let us know your thoughts and suggestions using this Google Form.  Your input is super valuable!

Random Student Selector

The Random Student Selector helps teachers quickly and fairly choose a student by number. Many teachers assign each student a number at the beginning of the year.  This tool uses those numbers to randomly select students for discussion, sharing, or participation. Teachers can choose to keep a student eligible or remove them to avoid repeats.

Random Group Generator

The Random Group Generator instantly places student numbers into color-coded, lettered groups. Many teachers assign each student a number for the year. This tool uses those numbers to quickly create balanced groups with no prep. Groups are easy for students to find and are ideal for labs, discussions, and collaborative activities.

Waves Vocab Bingo

We are exploring creative ways to give students opportunity to practice hearing, recognizing, and using science vocabulary. For this new waves vocabulary bingo game (different from the category bingo), the clue reader reads the definition of the vocabulary term and the bingo players mark the corresponding term on their unique digital bingo card.

We’d love your thoughts!  Should we make more of these?  Send us an email at admin@virtualscienceteachers.com and let us know what you’d love to see us create to support you and your students!

Mini-Challenges

We’ve added brand-new Mini-Challenges to give students quick, engaging ways to check their understanding of science concepts. These are designed to be easy to plug into class as warm-ups, review, or extension activities.

Beta Testing: Harp Simulation

We’re also beta testing a new Harp Simulation! This interactive model lets students explore how changing string length affects sound. We’re trying something new with this simulation by adding a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) question directly below it to support deeper thinking and science writing. We’d love your feedback as we continue improving it.

Beta Testing Scatter Plot Maker & All Graph Updates

Check out VST’s new Scatter Plot Maker — now with an option to add a best-fit line! We also upgraded all of our graph makers so your work won’t be lost if you close a tab (it saves locally), and adding/removing data points is easier than ever. Plus, line graphs now allow non-numerical x-axis labels, like months or days of the week.

Virtual Heating Ice Lab

Thanks to teacher feedback, we improved the portion of the Virtual Heating Ice Lab when students collect data to be much faster and require less clicking.

Case of the Missing Cellphones & Binary Code Generator

Improved the “Radio Wave Receiver” (binary code generator) in “The Case of the Missing Cell Phones”.  This “Radio Wave Receiver” can be accessed independently of the interactive.
