6.1 Think Like a Scientist, Solve Like an Engineer Bell Ringers
Beginning-of-year bell ringers that help students ask better questions, test ideas fairly, use data as evidence, build and critique models, and communicate like scientists and engineers.
6.1 Standard Focus
These bell ringers support Virginia Science SOL 6.1 by helping students practice scientific and engineering habits before they are expected to use them in every science unit.
- Ask questions and define problems: Turn curiosity into testable questions, hypotheses, variables, and design problems.
- Plan and carry out investigations: Identify variables, constants, controls, tools, units, accuracy, and fair tests.
- Analyze and interpret data: Look for patterns, construct and interpret graphs, compare group results, and consider limitations.
- Construct explanations and arguments: Use claims, evidence, reasoning, and criteria to explain or evaluate ideas.
- Develop and use models: Use models and simulations to explain phenomena while recognizing limitations.
- Communicate information: Evaluate sources and communicate scientific information clearly using evidence.
Teacher tip: These are intentionally playful for the beginning of the year. Use them to reveal how students think before teaching all the formal vocabulary. The goal is to build the classroom norm that science is about figuring things out, not just remembering terms.
