Questions, variables, and problems

Independent variable: the factor a scientist changes. Dependent variable: the result that is measured. A good science question asks how one may affect the other. A hypothesis is a testable prediction that connects the variables.

In engineering, first state the problem clearly. Then offer a possible solution by developing an object, tool, process, or system.

Think: What is changed? What is measured? What must the design do?

Investigations, measurement, and design

In an observational investigation, scientists watch, measure, and record without deliberately changing the system. In an experimental investigation, they change a factor and measure the response. They identify variables, constants, and controls when those parts are appropriate.

Scientists compare methods to decide which can collect more accurate data. They use appropriate tools or technology and record measurements in metric units. Engineers also use science ideas to design, build, and/or test objects, tools, processes, or systems.

Think: Is the method fair? Is the tool a good match? Is the measurement recorded with a metric unit?

Organizing and understanding data

Tables and graphs can organize data so patterns are easier to see. Scientists identify a pattern, explain what it may mean, and evaluate whether every point follows it. They also consider limits in the data, such as a small number of trials.

Scientists compare findings from different groups and discuss similarities and differences. Engineers use test data to evaluate and improve a design so it better meets the criteria.

Think: What pattern is visible? Are there exceptions or limits? How can the data improve the design?
