This simulation is not currently compatible with cell phones. However, it works seamlessly on iPads, computers, and other larger devices. For the best experience, please access the simulation using one of these devices. Thank you for your understanding!
Heat Lamp Simulation
Put materials under the same heat lamp, side by side, and investigate how they warm up and cool down.
How to use this
- Set the starting temperature. Every material begins at this same temperature.
- Set the light intensity. Off, Low, Medium, or High. You can turn the lamp off later to watch cooling.
- Pick your materials. Add a second or third material to compare them side by side under the same lamp.
- Advance time. Move forward minute by minute and watch the thermometers, table, and graph.
- Compare and explain. Reset saves your run below. Use your runs to write a claim, evidence, and reasoning.
Set Up Your Experiment
🔒 Materials and starting temperature are locked while time is running, so this stays a fair test. You can still change the light intensity (try turning the lamp off to watch cooling). Press Reset to start a new run.
Under the Lamp Time: 0 min
All materials share the same lamp, the same starting temperature, and the same amount of time. The only difference is the material itself.

Press "Advance 1 Minute" to start collecting data.
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
Run an experiment, press Reset, and it is saved below. Compare materials within one run, or change the lamp and run again to compare runs.
Your experiments
No experiments saved yet. Advance time to collect data, then press Reset. Your run will be recorded here automatically.

C Claim
Write one clear sentence that answers the question.
Sentence starter
E Evidence
Use numbers from your experiments above. Include at least two examples.
Sentence starter
R Reasoning
Explain why this happens, using the idea of specific heat: some materials need more energy to change temperature.
